Best Free Affiliate Software for SaaS Startups

A founder's honest look at which SaaS affiliate tools have genuinely free tiers, and where free really means a revenue cap or feature limit.

Free affiliate software is a marketing term, not a pricing tier

Every time I search "free affiliate software for SaaS," I get five listicles that read like ads for whichever tool paid for placement. So here's the version I'd actually want to read if I were vetting these tools myself: pricing pages checked directly, not homepage copy taken on faith.

Quick disclosure up front. I built one of the tools below. I'm not pretending to be neutral, but I checked every figure in this post against each vendor's current pricing page this week, and I'm not ranking us first just because it's convenient. If Systeme.io's free plan fits your situation better than ours, I'd rather you find that out now than churn out in month two.

What "free" actually means in this category

Two patterns show up over and over.

Free trial mislabeled as free. Rewardful, Tolt, FirstPromoter, and LinkMink all use the word "free" somewhere on their homepage, but what they mean is a 14-day trial with a card wall at the end. Once the clock runs out you land on a $39 to $199 a month plan, whether you've closed a single affiliate sale or not.

Genuinely free, with a cap. Endorsely, Systeme.io, and Referralful all let you run a real program at $0 with no expiration date. Each one caps something different: revenue, contacts, or program stage.

Neither pattern is dishonest on its own. It's a problem only when a homepage prints "free" in 40-point type and buries the cap in the FAQ page.

The tools with actual free tiers

ToolFree tier termsWhat triggers the upgradePaid plan starts at
ReferralfulFree to set up and run until your first affiliate makes a saleYour first commissioned affiliate sale$19.99/mo Starter, up to $7,500/mo in affiliate payouts
EndorselyFree up to $1,000/mo in affiliate-driven revenueCrossing the $1,000/mo revenue line$39/mo Pro, up to $5,000/mo
Systeme.ioFree forever: 1 affiliate program, 2,000 contacts, 3 funnelsHitting the contact or funnel limit, not revenue$17/mo Startup

One tool I looked at closely but left off that table: Trackdesk. Several review sites, and even some of Trackdesk's own older marketing pages, describe a "free until $1,000/mo" plan. But their current pricing page, checked directly rather than through a cached review, shows only paid plans starting at $329/mo for Business, plus a 14-day trial with no visible free tier. That's a wide enough gap between the marketing and the live page that I'd get it in writing from their sales team before counting on it for a launch.

The tools with no free plan at all

Land on any of these expecting a permanent free tier and you'll be disappointed.

  • Rewardful: $49/mo Starter, $99/mo Growth, $149/mo Enterprise, all behind a 14-day trial.
  • FirstPromoter: Same shape, $49 to $149 a month, 14-day trial, no card required to start the trial but required to keep the account.
  • Tolt: Starts higher at $69/mo Basic, up to $199/mo Pro, 14-day trial, 30-day refund window if you paid and changed your mind.
  • LinkMink: $39/mo Starter, $65/mo Growth, Stripe-only by design, 14-day trial.

None of these are bad products. Rewardful is the category standard for a reason. They just aren't free, and a founder with zero affiliates and zero program revenue shouldn't be paying $49 to $199 a month to find out if the whole idea even works for their product.

All four of these have been around long enough to build out reporting, fraud detection, and integrations most free tools skip. That maturity is exactly what the monthly fee buys, so if you're already funded and want the deeper feature set, paying from day one isn't a bad trade. It's a bad trade only if you're doing it before you've validated that the program is worth running at all.

How to actually pick between the free ones

Revenue caps and feature caps push you toward different tools depending on your stage.

If your program is likely to generate real revenue fast, a launch or a big creator partnership, a revenue-capped free plan like Endorsely's gets tight quickly. Blow through $1,000/mo in your first strong month and you're stuck making a forced upgrade decision before you've even learned what a healthy commission rate looks like for your product.

If you're pre-revenue on the program and mostly want to get the tracking right before you recruit a single affiliate, a stage-gated free plan fits better. That's the model we built at Referralful: no cost while you're setting up commission rules and testing the Stripe connection, and the meter starts only once someone actually earns a commission. You're never paying for a program that hasn't produced a dollar.

Systeme.io is the outlier because it isn't really an affiliate tool first, it's an all-in-one funnel builder with affiliate tracking bolted on. That's genuinely free forever under 2,000 contacts and 3 funnels, but you're also buying into their funnel, course, and email ecosystem to get it. Worth it if you were going to use that stack anyway, less worth it if you just want tracking on top of a product you already ship through Stripe.

For a broader look at what a full affiliate platform covers once you're past the free tier, our affiliate program software page walks through the feature set. If Rewardful is the tool you're actually weighing us against, the honest side-by-side is on our Rewardful comparison.

One more thing to check: fees on top of the subscription

Older affiliate networks often charged a percentage of every payout on top of the monthly fee, so it's worth confirming a tool doesn't do the same. Endorsely advertises no commission fees at all. Rewardful lists a 0% transaction fee on every plan. We're 0% on payouts too, since the monthly fee already covers the platform. Systeme.io doesn't charge a separate cut either, since affiliate tracking is bundled into the plan you're already paying for. It's a smaller line item than the sticker price, but it matters once your affiliates are actually generating volume.

What I'd actually do

If you're pre-revenue and want a program live without touching your card, start with Referralful or Systeme.io depending on whether you're already inside the Systeme.io ecosystem. If you expect real revenue in month one and want the more mature reporting Endorsely or Rewardful offer, budget for the paid tier from day one instead of assuming you'll stay under the free cap. Check our pricing page for the exact tier breakdown if that's the route you take with us.

Whichever you start with, revisit the decision after ninety days once you have real numbers on affiliate-driven revenue instead of guessing up front. The tool that made sense pre-launch isn't always the one that makes sense once affiliates are actually sending paying customers.

FAQ

Is there truly free affiliate software for SaaS startups?

Yes, but every genuinely free plan has a limit somewhere. Endorsely caps on monthly affiliate revenue, Systeme.io caps on contacts and funnels, and Referralful is free until your first affiliate actually earns a commission. Nobody gives away unlimited tracking forever.

Does Rewardful, Tolt, or FirstPromoter have a free plan?

No. All three only offer a 14-day free trial, then paid plans starting between $49 and $69 a month. None of them have a permanent free tier as of this writing.

When does Referralful start charging?

We don't charge anything while you're setting up your program. The first bill happens only after your first affiliate makes a sale, at which point you move to the $19.99/mo Starter plan with 0% fees on payouts.

What should I check before trusting a free affiliate tool?

Read the vendor's own pricing page, not a review site's summary of it. Confirm the exact number the free plan caps at and what happens automatically once you cross it: a forced upgrade prompt, or tracking that quietly stops working.

Set your program up and check for yourself on the pricing page, it costs nothing until your first affiliate closes a sale.
